In this volume, a group of outstanding legal and political science scholars examine the way the Constitution and the principles it embodies changed the landscape of Japanese society.

39 Law and Justice in Tokugawa Japan.
This series deals with the legal life of Japan during the two and a half centuries of the Tokugawa shogunate (1603-1867) when Japanese legal institutions evolved in the isolation of the country. The material in these books, gathered from the lips of village officials by a government-appointed traveling commission, provides invaluable information for the study of comparative law. Translated originally under the supervision of the eminent legal scholar Dr. John Henry Wigmore, these volumes comprise a treasury of information for the economist and social historian, affording a detailed and realistic picture of life during the Tokugawa period. h...this series is essential for any library dealing with Asian law or the historical and comparative study of legal systems." -Law Books in Review

40 The Government and Politics of Japan. J.\3,360
Hitoshi Abe, Muneyuki Shindo, and Sadafumi Kawato / trans. by James W. White.
258 p. 1994. ISBN 4-13-037021-9.
This textbook examines the workings of the government and politics of Japan, providing a macro view of the central government - the bicameral parliament and civil service bureaucracy - and of how these institutions work together. The larger issues facing Japan in the future - democracy and political participation, equality, nationalism, and defense - are presented with a clarity that brings into focus a government that just several decades ago was a newcomer to the system of parliamentary democracy. "A comprehensive and precise overviewcA basic text on Japanese politics that should last for years."-Asahi Evening News

41 The Political Dynamics of Japan. J.\3,150
Jun-ichi Kyogoku / trans. by Nobutaka lke. 250p. 1993. ISBN 4-13-037020-0
Japanese politics draws on two different traditions; the institutional structure was in essence imported from the West, while the participants - the leaders and voters - are products of a totally different cultural and social milieu. The way traditional forces and processes work within the political system is the central theme of this authoritative work now revised and abridged for foreign readers. "In this translation of his bestselling work, one of Japan's most distinguished political scientists sets forth a lifetime of wide-ranging, subtle, and original reflections on Japan's political processes. " -Ezra F Vogel, Harvard University

Its Development and Structure, 1937-1994. Second Edition.
Takafusa Nakamura / trans. by Jacqueline Kaminski. 310p. 1995. ISBN 4-13-047063-9
The economy of Japan, with its high rates of growth, exemplary productivity levels, overall stability, and resilience in the face of financial and other crises, has been one of the wonders of the postwar world. In this book, which has since its first publication in 1981 been a standard text and reference work on the postwar economy, one of Japan's leading economist - scholars describes its workings, its roots in the prewar and postwar years, and its structure and institutions. For this revised second edition, the author has written several new chapters, added data bringing the discussion up to the 1990s, and reorganized the presentation . "[The first edition is]cone of the best accounts of Japan's post-war economic development."-Ramon H. Myers, The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science.

43 The Political Economy of Japan Money. J.\5,040
Shigeo Nakao. 220p. 1995. ISBN 4-13-047064-7
The 1980s saw Japan's emergence as a major financial power as well as an industrial giant. Investments abroad multiplied at a record pace. Japanese banks ranked at the top of lists of the world's largest institutions. In this volume, an economist analyzes Japanese money, asking where it came from and examining how it was used. He describes Japan's borrowing and lending on international markets and internal flows of capital, relating them to the nation's industrial structure, social traditions, and patterns of labor distribution. He also looks at Japan's banks and their 1980s globalization, relating their competitiveness to their low profit structure at home. Finally, he discusses the future of Japan's economy in the wake of the collapse of money-based prosperity.

44 The Contemporary Japanese Economy. An Overview. J.\4,200
Ryuichiro Tachi / trans. by Richard Walker. 222p. 1993. ISBN 4-13-047059-0
This volume provides a concise introduction to the workings of Japan's economy today. Using both macro- and microeconomic tools of analysis, the author, an eminent scholar and adviser on monetary economic policy, outlines the characteristics and activities of both the public and the private sectors. Rather than emphasizing Japan's "unique" features and their effect on economic processes, he uses the standard concepts of savings, investment, and GNP to study the behavior of markets and the roles of such economic actors as households, corporations, and government. Placing today's economic issues in historical perspective, this volume also looks at where Japan's economy is headed. As a concise, yet comprehensive introduction, it will be useful to readers with both scholarly and practical interests in Japan the economic giant.

45 Japan's "Guest Workers" Issues and Public Policies. J.\3,780
Haruo Shimada / trans. by Roger Northridge. 230p. 1994. ISBN 4-13-047061-2
Attracted by Japan's prosperity and chronic labor shortages, foreign workers have been migrating to Japan in increasing numbers since the mid-1980s. While their presence has been a boon for firms in the construction and other industries, the fact that many lack proper documentation makes them vulnerable to economic exploitation and shuts them off from systems of health care and other forms of social support In this volume an economist looks at the foreign worker influx and its ramifications for Japan economically, socially, and politically. He argues that the government must work with private industry and labor unions to prevent the emergence of a discriminatory two-tier employment structure, and advocates a "work and learn" program that will integrate foreign workers into Japan's economy.

46 Japan's Public Sector. How the Government is Financed. J.\4,830
ed. by Tokue Shibata. 224p.1993. ISBN 4-13-047058-2
Despite its relatively small size, Japan's public sector, through its role in the government's financial policies, has contributed to the country's high rate of economic growth. This study, which presents factual details on financial administration, budget formation, taxation, and disbursement of revenue, is skillfully balanced with discussion of policy issues and conflict. The debate over taxation and spending, relations between the central and local governments, and the expansion of social welfare issues in a country with a declining birthrate are also among the topics examined.

47 The Japanese Economy. Trade, Industry, and Government. J.\6,825
Ryutaro Komiya. 416p.1990. ISBN 4-13-047048-5
In this volume, one of Japan's leading economic theoreticians examines the interplay between private industry and government that has strengthened the Japanese economy over the past several decades, and shows how it has affected both the internal workings of the economy and its interrelations with the rest of the world. The author focuses in particular on the two sides of the coin of external economic relations, trade and overseas investment, analyzing both the strengths and the weaknesses in Japan's approach to the issues involved.

49 Japan in the World Economy of the 1980s. J.\4,725
Saburo Okita. 280p.1989. ISBN 4-13-047045-0
The 1980s were a momentous decade for Japan. Economic growth, trade surpluses, and the yen's appreciation in value have made the nation a wealthy and powerful player on the world economic stage. These changes also exacerbated friction between Japan and the industrialized nations of Europe and North America, and raised expectations that Japan would do more to stimulate growth in the developing world. Saburo Okita, who served as Japan's Foreign Minister and in other official capacities as a diplomat, negotiator, and economist, brings his many years of experience to the analysis of Japan's role in the world economy, both in the 1980s and in the future.

50 Postwar Reconstruction of the Japanese Economy. J.\5,250
ed. by the Special Survey Committee, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (September 1946)
Comp. by Saburo Okita. 214p. 1992. ISBN4-13-047056-6
In 1945, as World War‡U was drawing to a close, Japan's Foreign Ministry convened a special committee of economists and policymakers to study the country's economic position and recommend a course of action for its reconstruction. Their report, which was issued in September 1946 and served as a blueprint for government policies in the years that followed, is reprinted here in English, with introductions that place it in context and underline its importance. The reconstruction of Japan's economy was essentially a process of transition from a managed economy to a market economy. The story of this process, which began with the report in this volume, is an instructive one for both historians and policymakers in countries undergoing the same transition today.

Economy. Yutaka Kosai / trans. by Jacqueline Kaminski. 238p.1986 ISBN 4-13-047027-2
An economist who participated in policy-making during Japan's heady period of rapid growth looks with a historian's eye at the "high-speed growth" years. In a series of thoughtful essays, he traces the roots of Japan's "economic miracle" in the fiscal and monetary policies of the early postwar years; analyzes the economic and political record of an age that ended abruptly in the early 1970s with sharp increases in the price of oil; and speculates about where the Japanese economy is headed in the future. "Should become the standard English-language treatment of the postwar economy from the 'market-oriented' point of view."-Martin Bronfenbrenner, Journal of Japanese Trade & Industry.

Countries.
ed. by Shoichi Yamashita. 326p. 1991.ISBN 4-13-047051-5
Japanese investment is changing the face of industries and economies all over the world, but nowhere more than in the industrializing countries of Southeast Asia. In this volume economists from Japan and from several of the ASEAN nations examine the effect of Japanese investments on industries and enterprises in Southeast Asia, both in theory and in practice. They focus on the transferability of Japanese technology and management style to enterprises in countries with varying economic styles and cultures, and their contributions range from case studies of particular factories to a discussion of the potential for Japanese management techniques in other Asian countries.

58 Skill Formation in Japan and Southeast Asia. J.\6,090
ed. by Kazuo Koike and Takenori Inoki. 272p.1991. ISBN 4-13-047049-3.
Skill formation|the training of workers, both on and off the job|is an important managerial function in an industrial economy. This volume examines the skill formation process in Japan and compares it with that in the countries of Southeast Asia. On the basis of surveys and observations in Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan, the contributors compare four industries: cement, car battery manufacture, machinery, and banking. Differences are noted, but there are also many striking similarities in the way workers learn new skills and take on responsibilities for production and supervision. The contributors also ask whether Japan's skill formation systems are transferable to the newly industrializing economies of Southeast Asia.

59 Technology Diffusion, Productivity Employment, and Phase Shifts in J.\7,140
Developing Economies.
Kazusbi Ohkawa and Katsuo Otsuka. 306p.1994. ISBN 4-13-047062-0
This volume focuses on the common problems encountered by economies in the process of growth. The authors view economic development as an extended process, and the model is formulated in terms of a dualistic structure, which they see as characterizing developing economies|the traditional coexisting with the modern. Japan's example is used to illustrate one economic development pattern, and is contrasted with other paths to growth. This volume will be of use in academic studies as well as in training programs for those involved in planning and managing developing economies.

60 Lectures on Developing Economies. Japan's Experience and Its J.\7,560
Relevance.
Kazushi Ohkawa and Hirohisa Kohama. 340p. 1989. ISBN 4-13-047044-2
The lectures in this book are addressed to government officials and business people engaged in the mechanics of economic development, as well as to economists. Based on materials used in training courses at the International Development Center of Japan, they approach development from two directions: through the phases of industrialization, import substitution, and exporting; and through the major factors of capital, technology, and human resources. The example of Japan's development, traced through long-term statistics dating back more than a century, is used to illustrate the problems faced by all developing countries.

62 The Agricultural Development of Japan. A Century's Perspective. J.\6,825
Yujiro Hayami and Saburo Yamada. 294pp. 1991. ISBN 4-13-047052-3
This volume outlines the development of agriculture in modern Japan, identifying the sources of the productivity growth that played such a critical role in its economic development. Major emphasis is placed on the evolution of an institutional framework and organizations that dominate the agricultural sector. Also traced is the growth of agricultural protection policies from their beginning in the early postwar period to the present day. With a rigorous theoretical framework and analytical techniques, the authors critically appraise the Japanese experience for its applicability to development strategy in other countries. A comprehensive compilation of long-term statistics makes the book doubly useful for those concerned with Japanese and Asian economic development.

to Institutional Change.
Yujiro Hayami and Masao Kikuchi. 290p.1981. ISBN4-13-077010-1

The authors base their analysis on surveys of villages in the Philippines and Indonesia as well as research observations in India, Japan, and other Asian countries. They suggest that, if traditional community institutions can transform themselves appropriately, new technologies can be a major force for promoting both economic growth and equality. 64 The Evolution of the International Monetary System. How Can J.\7,875
Efficiency and Stability be Attained?
ed. by Yoshio Suzuki, Junichi Miyake, and Mitsuaki Okabe. 352p.1990. ISBN 4-13-047046-9
The system of floating exchange rates adopted in 1973, together with the rapid technological innovations in data processing and financial transactions of the past two decades, have given the world monetary system an unprecedented potential for volatility, which is increased by trade imbalance among the major countries and the decline of confidence in the dollar. In this volume, economists, central bankers from a dozen countries, and representatives of international financial institutions discuss the problems of achieving efficiency and stability in the global financial system. Their contributions range from historical surveys through theoretical examinations to policy proposals, including one for the establishment of a "global currency." This volume will be of interest to economists and policy makers concerned with the international monetary system.

65 Toward a World of Economic Stability. Optimal Monetary Framework J.\6,825
and Policy. Ed. by Yoshio Suzuki and Mitsuaki Okabe. 384p. 1988. ISBN 4-13-047039-6
The world economic system has in recent years been characterized by enormous instability in prices, growth, and international payments balances. After 1973|the beginning of the general floating exchange rate system and the year of the first oil-price hike|inflationary pressures that had emerged in the 1960s became more intense and widespread. By the early 1980s, this persistent inflation had subsided in most countries. However, large international payments imbalances among major industrial countries constituted a new source of instability, fomenting trade protectionism in the most persistent cases. The contributors to this volume seek to identify the causes of the domestic and international instability after 1973 and discuss the development of an optimal monetary regime.

66 Financial Innovation and Monetary Policy. Asia and the West. J.\5,250
ed. by Yoshio Suzuki and Hiroshi Yomo. 350pp. 1986. ISBN 4-13-047029-9
The floating currency exchange regime, worldwide inflation and instability, the growth of open securities markets, high interest rates and widespread deficit financing, and progress in computer and telecommunications technologies have stimulated major structural changes in financial institutions and their operating procedures. In this volume a group of economists examine the changes that have swept over the financial systems of both Asian and Western nations, and discuss their implications for monetary policymakers.

Zaibatsu, family-owned business groups, reached their mature form in the early decades of the 20th century and dominated numerous sectors of Japan's economy until their dissolution following World War‡U. This book studies the factors that marked the history of zaibatsu and the political and economic times in which they thrived.

ed. by Takeshi Yuzawa and Masaru Udagawa. 302p. 1990. ISBN 4-13-047036-1
The modernization of Japan's economy began under the strong influence of foreign enterprises. From the 19th century on, major manufacturing companies were transplanted from Western countries, and merchant houses, while maintaining their traditional methods, learned Western trading practices. This volume analyzes the business activities of the early foreign companies, their successes as well as their failures, and investigates the relationship between their experience and Japan's industrial and business development, the evolution of "Japanese-style management," and industrial policy.

68 No. 17 Changing Patterns of International Rivalry. Some Lessons From J.\7,140
the Steel Industry. ed. by Etsuo Abe and Yoshitaka Suzuki. 330p. 1991.
ISBN 4-13-047050-7
As the saying "iron is the state" signifies, the iron and steel industry has been the key industry in every industrialized country. At the outset of the Industrial Revolution, Britain was the largest producer of iron but was surpassed by the United States and Germany in the late 19th century. Since the mid-20th century, Japan has been a major producer, second to the USSR. In analyzing why and how supremacy over the industry changed from one country to another, business historians present case studies in which such factors as technological innovation, resources and markets, constraints placed by labor unions, management's innovative flair, the capital market, and international competitiveness are reviewed.

Ed. by Akira Kudo and Terushi Hara. 258p. 1992. ISBN 4-13-047054-X
International cartels date back to the late 19th century, and this study focuses on the 1920s and 1930s, when they came into their own. The contributors to this book examine cases in the manufacturing industry, particularly the industrial cartels in dyestuffs, electronics, chemicals, and nitrogen, in Europe, the United States, and Japan. In analyzing the factors contributing to the formation of international cartels among large corporations, and their management and impact, this volume also reveals the strategies and structures of large corporations in general.

Corporations.
ed. by Nobuo Kawabe and Eisuke Daito. 256p. 1993. ISBN 4-13-047057-4
Systematic education and training in business is a relatively new concept, and differs from country to country. Historically, apprenticeship and in-house training have been the norm, but today there are a variety of educational options. In this volume, scholars from the United States, Britain, France, Sweden, and Japan examine the relationship between educational systems and industrial society in their respective countries, the historical context in which such relationships were born, and how ultimately corporate behavior is governed by the limits of business education.

68 No. 20 World War‡Uand the Transformation of Business Systems. J.\7,140
Ed. by Jun Sakudo and Takao Shiba. 302p. 1994. ISBN 4-13-047060-4
Was World War‡U a turning point or a hiatus in the evolution of business systems? What effects did the economic mobilization and wartime industrial demands have on combatant nations? These questions are addressed by an international group of business historians who examine the wartime legacy by tracing changes in technology and production resources, in production management systems, in finance and ownership, and finally in government and enterprise relationships. Included are case studies analyzing the wartime economies and industries of Japan, the United States, the USSR, Italy, Britain, Germany, and France. Despite the abundance of academic research on the war and its significance in reshaping society and political life, little has been published on the effects of the war on economic and business systems, and this volume will serve as a catalyst for further research in the field.

Education and Sociology

69 Educational Thought and Ideology in Modern Japan. State Authority J.\4,725
and Intellectual Freedom.
Teruhisa Horio / ed. and tran. by Steven Platzer. 436p. 1994 ISBN4-13-057079-X
Japanese schools are widely admired abroad for their success in instilling high levels of literacy and numeracy in the population at large. In human terms, however, with cutthroat competition for admission to prestigious schools, conflicts over textbook censorship by the government, and insulated institutions, the system seems to many to be on the brink of serious trouble. Horio takes a hard look at education in Japan, and finds it wanting. After describing the history and mechanisms of state control as practiced in modem Japan, he offers his vision of a free education built around the right of the child to learn, " c an outstanding work of scholarship, and of international importance and relevance,"-Edmund King, Comparative Education. 71 Ten Great Educators of Modern Japan. A Japanese Perspective. J.\6,090
comp. and ed. by Benjamin C Duke / with a foreword by Edwin O. Reischauer.
256p. 1989. ISBN4-13-057017-X
This book profiles the lives and work of ten educators who played important roles in the development of educational thought and the establishment of an educational system in modern Japan. As the founders of schools and the makers of policies, they believed in the power of education to bring about social and political change, and many worked to open school doors to women and others who once were denied formal education. These short biographies, written by present-day scholars, illuminate the history of education in modern Japan by introducing a group of pioneering educators.

72 Education and Examination in Modern Japan. J.\5,670
lkuo Amano / trans. by William K. Curnmings and Fwniko Cummings / with a foreword by Ronald P. Dore. 256p. 1990. ISBN 4-13-057018-8
A specialist in the sociology of education describes the rise of Japan's "examination culture" during the nation's first half century of modernization. The author also discusses the role of education in Japan's development and traces the origins of today's "examination hell"-the extreme pressure under which young people are placed as they grow up in a society in which examinations are the gateway to professional and social advancement. "[Amano's] book helps us to understand how entrance examinations came to play such a decisive role and how they inescapably led to educational credentialism,"--The Japan Times

73 Education Reform in Postwar Japan. The 1946 U.S. Education Mission. J.\10,290
Gary H. Tsuchimochi / with a foreword by Carol Gluck. 396p.1993. ISBN 4-13-057200-8
Postwar education in Japan was influenced in dramatic ways by the policies and recommendations of the occupying Allied Powers. The Occupation authorities were eager to democratize Japan's schools, and measures implemented in the ear]y postwar years had a lasting impact on the structure of the Japanese education system, the role of teachers, and the content of the curriculum. Occupation thinking about education, in turn, was shaped by the reports of two study missions by American educators who toured Japan's schools and conferred with local officials and scholars. This book reports on the first, and most important, of these missions. Working with newly declassified materials in U. S. government archives, the author traces the organization of the 1946 Education Mission to Japan, discusses and analyzes its recommendations, and demonstrates the contributions of Japanese educators to the Mission's work.

75 Health and Illness in Changing Japanese Society. J.\5,460
Kyoichi Sonoda. 180p. 1988 ISBN 4-13-068137-0
Health, illness, and medical care have become major problems in industrialized countries as the average age of the population increases, the cost of medical care rises, and the number of people who must be cared for by health-care facilities multiplies. These are in one sense medical problems, but they are also social problems with their roots in social and cultural changes. Their solutions must also have social and cultural components. This book describes health problems and medical-care issues in Japan, tracing them to their origins in cultural patterns and social changes, discusses a number of specific problems in health and illness from the viewpoint of medical sociology, and compares Japan's experiences with those of other countries.

76 Culture and Management in Japan. J.\3,885
Shuji Hayashi / trans. by Frank Baldwin. 204p. 1988. ISBN 4-13-047040-X
Business management is often thought of as a set of techniques that manifest themselves in much the same form wherever they are used. In this volume, a noted economist shows that management has more than a casual connection with the society in which it is practiced. Using Japan as his primary model, he emphasizes the cultural dimensions of management]the ways in which traditional beliefs and thought patterns lie behind business decisions. The author's provocative observations have important implications for the discussion of whether management technique can be transplanted from one culture to another.

ANTHROPOLOGY

77 Circumpolar Religion and Ecology. An Anthropology of The North. J.\9,240
ed. by Takashi lrimoto and Takako Yamada. 464p.1994. ISBN 4-13-057100-1
The northernmost populated regions of the earth have historical, ecological, and cultural similarities that often supersede geographical boundaries. The "northern culture" has its roots in the early settling of these regions and in the interaction of human and natural forces there. The religions of the indigenous peoples of the northern regions reflect their views of life and death, nature and society, and evolved in close connection with their struggles to survive in a challenging natural environment. The study of the interconnections between religion and ecology is an exciting new area of cultural anthropology.

Andean Ecological Complementarity. ed. by Shozo Masuda, Izumi Shimada, and
Craig Morris. 582p.1985. ISBN 4-13-066094-2
One of the most intriguing aspects of the central Andean civilization is that for centuries the seat of power and the highest demographic density were found at altitudes above 3,000 meters. It was long believed that the peoples of the Andes settled along geographical lines, in mountains. coast, and jungle. However, J. V. Murra's 1972 hypothesis, known as ecological complementarity or vertical control, opened up new avenues for scholarly exploration of the Andean civilization. In this volume, 23 anthropologists, historians, archaeologists, and geographers study and criticize the limits of the Murra hypothesis.

SCIENCE

86 Chironomidae (Diptera) of Japan. J.\12,600
Manabu Sasa and Mihoko Kikuchi. 340p. 1995. ISBN 4-13-067103-0
The non-biting chironomid midges (Family Chironomidae, Order Diptera) include numbers of species whose larvae develop in fresh water and which play an important role in the transmission of nutrients along the food chain. They consume organic matter and microorganisms from the bottoms of these bodies of water, and then are themselves eaten by fishes and arthropods. They do not usually cause damage or transmit diseases, and as a result have been neglected by entomological research. But their usefulness in indicating levels of pollution and water quality conditions makes them valuable objects of study. This comprehensive summary of available information and research on the chironomid midges of Japan and East Asia serves as a reference work valuable not only to entomologists but also to environmental and public-health scientists.

Series Editors: Morie Sekiguchi and E.G.J. Olsen.
Vol. 5 Prognosis and Treatment of Cardiomyopathies and Myocarditis.
Ed. by Morie Sekiguchi and Peter J. Richardson. 426p. 1994. ISBN 4-13-068156-7
Cardiomyopathies are defined as heart muscle disease of unknown cause. They are prevalent in men during their most productive years, and represent a major cause of disability and death from heart disease. Clinically, cardiomyopathies manifest themselves as congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, conduction disturbances, embolic phenomena, or sudden death. Although it is often difficult to determine the exact nature or mechanism of the disease process, recent research has shown that viruses, immunological idiosyncrasy, and molecular and genetic conditions are contributing factors. This volume deals with all aspects of heart muscle disease and includes both clinical and basic research as well as day-to-day clinical cardiology.

90 Evolution of Cancer. J.\8,610
Shinichi Okuyama and Hitoshi Mishina. 264p. 1990. ISBN 4-13-068152-4
From the knowledge that all of the known anti-cancer substances work by conferring immunity in archaic and quasispecific areas, and that cancer has selective radiosensitivity, the authors of this provocative volume have hypothesized that cancer may represent evolution in reverse, or "devolution," from the normal mammalian status, and that human carcinogenesis itself changes with advancing age in a way that echoes the phylogenetic order in the evolution of life on earth. Based on this point of view, the authors discuss ways to integrate the currently available therapeutic measures and make them more effective.

100 Theoretical Tunnel Mechanics. J.\8,610
Yoshiji Matsumoto and Takashi Nishioka. 234p.1991. ISBN 4-13-068203-2
The theory of tunnel design has lagged behind the development of design techniques, which are based on experience in the field. For example, tunnels are normally lined with concrete after excavation, but there is no reliable basis in theory for determining the thickness of the lining to be used. As a result, some linings are too thick, while others are so thin that tunnels collapse. After tunnelling, if the strain energy, which accumulates in the ground as a result of diastrophism and the influence of gravity, exceeds a certain limit, the ground around a tunnel will collapse. In this volume the authors present theoretical design principles based on studies of strain energy. A knowledge of tunnel mechanics based on strain energy will give engineers a new theoretical basis for tunnel design and construction.

ISBN 4-13-68205-9
The swift advance in millimeter wave astronomy since 1970 has led to the discovery of a number of a new and exotic molecules located in cold and dark clouds of gas and dust in interstellar space. Millimeter wave observations, laboratory analyses of the molecular spectra, new theories of chemical reactions, and computations of the quantum chemistry of these substances have opened a vast new field to the study of interstellar matter and its evolution. Considerable contributions have also been made to the knowledge of the formation and evolution of stars, the structure and dynamics of galaxies, and the circulation of matter in the universe. Interstellar molecules are thus a vibrant field of study, in which astronomers, chemists, and physicists work in cooperation. In describing the latest achievements in the studies of interstellar molecules, this book covers astronomical observations, laboratory spectroscopy, kinematics, and reaction theory to modelling of interstellar molecules.

106 Nonradial Oscillations of Stars. Second Edition. J.\8,400
Wasaburo Unno, Yoji Osaki, Hiroyasu Ando, Hideyuki Saio, and Hiromoto Shibahashi
432p.1989. ISBN 4-13-066103-5
Nonradial oscillations and related phenomena are inherent to most stars, which resemble musical instruments in their ability to oscillate in modes which differ from one star to another and change in delicate ways as a star evolves. Unlike instruments, however, stars function as heat engines to drive their own oscillations. This volume presents the fundamental concepts involved in nonradial oscillations, summarizes the research that identified and characterized them, and discusses new developments in the field. Special emphasis is placed on the linear adiabatic and non-adiabatic theory of oscillations. Since the publication of the first edition in 1979, a great deal of progress has been made. In particular, a new research field called helio-and astero-seismology has opened up, in which the internal structures of the sun and other stars are probed using their oscillations. The author's intention throughout is to make this not only a useful monograph for specialists but also a basic textbook on stellar nonradial oscillations.

107 Photometric Atlas of Northern Bright Galaxies. J.\23,100
ed. by Keiichi Kodaira, Sadanori Okamura, and Shin-ichi lchikawa. 220p. 1990.
ISBN 4-13-066107-8
Galaxies are the most massive, luminous astronomical objects that are bound by gravity. They comprise the major fraction of luminous mass in the universe. Recent investigations of galaxies often require statistical analyses of a large body of observational data. A high degree of homogeneity in the data is the key to the success of such investigations. The primary aim of this atlas is to provide researchers in astronomy with homogeneous observational data for as many galaxies as possible. This volume presents photometric data, images, and other illustrative information on 791 bright galaxies obtained from modem digital surface photometry. It presents both illustrative information and processed photometric Parameters in a consistent system and will serve as a basic reference in future observations of the galaxies in optional as well as other wave-length regions, such as radio, infrared, and X-ray.

Analyses.
Bunshiro Takase, Keiichi Kodaira, and Sadanori Okamura. 92p. 1984. ISBN 4-13-068103-6
The quantitative and objective classification of galaxies is an important step in our understanding of galaxies. This is best achieved through surface photometry of galaxies, a technique which has advanced remarkably in recent years. Photographs of galaxies taken in several color bands accumulated over years can now be efficient]y reduced to photometric data with the help of high-performance measuring instruments and computerized image processing techniques. By analyzing these data, quantitative information on the luminosity and color distribution for every element of galaxies may be obtained. This atlas presents the photographs of selected galaxies taken with either the Okayama 188-cm reflector or the Kiso 105-cm Schmidt telescope.

109 Geology of Japan. J.\10,500
Toshio Kimura, Itaru Hayami, and Shizuo Yoshida. 298p. 1991. ISBN 4- 13-068200-8
This book presents a panoramic view of the geology of the Japanese islands, which, like many regions of the circum-Pacific belt, have an extremely complex and controversial geological history. It describes the formation and geologic structure of the archipelago and its physical characteristics, and outlines chronologically its stratigraphy, igneous activity, metamorphism, and paleogeography. Index maps, correlation charts, and many other tables and figures supplement each chapter.

110 Photographic Atlas of an Accretionary Prism. J.\10,500
Geologic Structures of the Shimanto Belt, Japan. Asahiko Taira, Timothy Byrne, and Junichiro Ashi. 130pp. 1992. ISBN 4-13-068204-0
The sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks of south-west Japan represent one of the best documented subduction complexes in the world. Extensive study of these rocks over several decades has revealed that this continental margin evolved during the past 100 to 200 million years as thousands of kilometers of oceanic crust were subducted. The Cretaceous to Tertiary accretionary sequences called the Shimanto Belt cover a wide range of metamorphic grades. This atlas summarizes the complex history of these exceptional exposed rocks through a series of outcrop] to microscopic]scale photographs, sketches, and geologic maps. The overall objective is to broaden the base of general knowledge of the growth of continental margins and to provide an integrated framework for more detailed studies.

ed. by Ryuichi Tsuchi and J.C. Ingle Jr. 268p. 1992. ISBN 4-13-068206-7
Determination of the precise geological age of a stratum by confirmation of its synchroneity or correlation with other strata over an extended area is one of the most important objectives of geological science. Recent advances in research techniques have led to many new findings concerning changes during the Pacific Neogene. This book is a report of the Fifth Round of the International Geological Correlation Programme (GCP-246) project, and was written by specialists in various fields The papers in this volume offer solid evidence of recent progress in understanding the Neogene evolution of the Pacific region and the power of both local and regional approaches to reading the stratigraphic record.
